Elizabeth Burd Bistline, age 79 yrs. 2months, & 5days, died at her home in Mannsville on Fed. 19, 1908, of neuralgia of the heart. Mrs. Bistline was sick about three weeks and from the time she she took sick until she died everything was done for her that mooving hands could do, but the grim reaper, death seemed to have laid a firm hand on her frail body. On Friday preceding her death her family saw that she was growing weaker. She became unconcious about 7 p.m. on Monday evening and remained in that condition until 3 a.m. Wednesday morning, when she peacefully passed away.
Mrs. Bistline was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Burd, of Mannsville, and was the third child of a family of ten children. Six of her brothers an sisters are dead. Her brother Levi died at Byron, Ill: her brother William died quite young. many years ago; her sister, Mrs. Sarah Derrick, died at Everett, Pa. about ten years ago; her brother Reuben died some years ago at Lancaster, Pa.; her sister Mrs. Ellen Record, died at Harrisburg about a year ago; Her remaining brother and sisters, are George W. Burd and Mrs. Amelia Bupp, of this place, and Mrs. Sena McIlhenny, of New Bloomfield. She was born and raised and lived all her life in Mannsville. She was married to George Bistline in 1848. To them were born six children, Three sons and Three daughters. all dying quite young. Her husdand died March 22, 1900. He surviving sons are William H. of Grand Junction, Iowa and James C. of Newport, and Charles B. Bistline, of Pleasant Valley. Fourteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren also survive her.
Grandma Bistline was a woman of fine christian charactor. She was a true and loving wife, a kind and loving mother, and a kind and generous and noble neighbor. She was a member of the Evangelical Church of Pleasant Valley for forty years at the time of her death. Her remains were buried at Mannsville on Friday at 10 o'clock. Short services were held at her late home. The body was taken to the U.B. church, where the sermon was was preached by her pastor, Rev. C.W. Hipple, of Elloitsburg, who spoke beautifully of the christian charactor of the deceased. The body was enclosed in a black cloth-covered casket and on her bosom lay a wreath of barley that her son William had given her two years ago while she was on a visit to his home in Iowa. After the service was over an invitation was given to view the remains. There she lay as if quietly sleeping, and before the casket was closed for the last time, her two granddaughters, Mrs. Nettie Rice and Mrs. Dora Moyer, came forward and covered their grandmother with a beautiful burial blanket. The casket was then closed and taken to the union cemetery where interment was made.
