George W. Burd, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Perry County passed away at his home as reported in THE NEWS, previously . He was found dead in bed about 6 o'clock in the morning by his wife, who had spoken to him 3 or 4 hours before when he was apparently in the best of health. Death evidently was due to heart failure. Mr. Burd was born July 18, 1839 on the farm near Mannsville where he lived until his retirement some years ago, when he moved his property in Mannsville. He was aged 81 years, 24 days. He was the son of the late William and Elizabeth Burd and the last surviving member of a family of ten children.
Mr. Burd always took a prominant part in civic, economic and political affairs in his county. He was elected a County Cimmissioner of Perry County on November 10, 1887. He held the office of tax collector, supervisor of Centre Township and was also a director of the Mutual Fire Insurance company of Perry County for a period of six years.
The surviving children of Mr. Burd are as follows; Mrs. James Hollenbaugh of Mannsville, James Burd of Builders Exchange, Pittsburgh; and Mrs. C.M. Nicholas, who husband is pastor of the Garfield Square Lutheran church, Pottsville. One daughter, Mrs. Charles Shreffler died a few years ago and wa buried in the cemetery at Newport. There are nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held in the Mannsville Lutheran Church at 10 o'clock Sunday morning, August 15th, conducted by Rev. J.W. Weeter and interment made in the family burial plot in Newport Cemetery. The funeral was largely attended. Those attending from a distance were; William Derrick of Everett; M.J. Derrick and family of Duncannon; James Shrefflerof Lorraine, Ohio; James Burd of Pittsburgh; Mrs. Laura Nicholas and Rev. C.M. Nicholas, Pottsville.
Mr. Burd as an honest, intelligent, upright and progresive citizen and a decided asset to the community in which he lived. He will be missed in the community life of which he was a dominant factor for so many years. The high esteem in which he was held by a host of friends was attested to by a number of most beautiful floral tributes and also by large gathering of neighbors and friends, who came bearing expressions of sympathy and loss both as the family residence and the church were services were held.
