Joel Bertram, the first child of William and Nancy (Stinson) Bertram, was born 03 Jan 1808 in Lee Co., Virginia and died in Wayne Co., Kentucky on 17 Apr 1885. He was the elected clerk of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Wayne Co., Kentucky from 1841 to 1885, except for 10 years (1860-1870) when the position was held by his brother William. He was married to Elizabeth "Betsy" Hull, daughter of Moses and Elizabeth Hull. Betsy is buried next to him very near the right side of the church building,.

Originally both graves had similar tombstones but a fire in the church caused part of the roof to collapse onto their graves, destroying both markers. Out of gratitude to Joel for his many years of service to the church the members erected a new tombstone for Joel with a long and detailed inscription. They did not replace the tombstone for Betsy. A few years ago one of Betsy's descendants, Connie Sue Bertram Anderson, had a flat gray granite marker placed on the grave so it would not be lost.

Joel and Betsy were the parents of ten children: Dorothy, Jesse A., Teressa, William Henry, Isaac M., Joel A., Elizabeth, Nancy, Mezane, and Albert Luther Bertram.
