Last Saturday Haagan Nelson one of the pioneers of this county passed away at the home of his son, Nels Haagenson with whom he had been staying for the past year. Death came quite suddenly and was due to old age, Mr. Nelson being almost 86 years old.
He was born in Norway November 5, 1839. At the age of 22 he was married to Marie Nelson who preceeded her husband into eternity by ten years, having died in 1915.
Mr. Nelson came to this country in 1874 and settled in Fillmore County, Minnesota and six years later moved to North Dakota where he bought a farm in Norma Township west of Fingal and later acquired a farm near Eastedge and resided there until he moved to Fingal about a year ago.
There live to survive their aged father five children. Nels Haagenson of Fingal, Carl Nelson of Eastedge, Nick Nelson of Kathryn, Mrs. Carrie Smethson of Morristown South Dakota, and Mrs. Matilda Wahl of Bowman ND. Another daughter Mrs. Julie Peterson of Norma Township, died several years ago.
Funeral services were held at Immanuel Church on Tuesday this week, Rev. Sturgness officiating. The aged man was laid to rest in Immanuel Cemetery, which is located on the first farm Mr. Nelson owned upon coming to North Dakota, the church and cemetery site having been donated by him to the congregation.
The Herald joins the community in expressing a sincere sympathy to the surviving children in the loss of their father and an old and honored citizen of the community.
