On Sunday March 15, 2015, Dewitt Pickering passed away to be with Jesus Christ his Lord at the age of 88. He was born January 22, 1927.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday March 17th, 2015 at 11:00am at Hebron Baptist Church. Dr. Brett Goldson and Dr. Don Stewart will officiate. Visitation will be held from 6:00pm – 8:00pm Monday, March 16, 2015 at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Laurel, MS and again from 10:30 until service time on Tuesday at the Church. Burial will take place in Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 55 years, Marilynn, a daughter Delia (Joe) Flynt of Taylorsville, a son Neil (Pam) Pickering of Laurel, 4 grandchildren, Lory (David) Hosey of Stringer, Tyler Pickering of Jackson, Joe Lee Flynt of Taylorsville and step granddaughter Paisley Walters of Laurel. He also leaves behind 2 sisters Elsie McQueen, and Nell Buckley. He was predeceased in death by his father and mother, Isaac and Cora Pickering. He was also predeceased by brothers J. C. Pickering, Merrill Pickering, and Tommy Pickering, and sisters Verna Gordon, Kathleen Williamson, Pattie Mae Gunn, and Peggy Pickering.

At 17 years old Dewitt was asked by his pastor if he felt God was calling him to full time music ministry. 62 years later, he retired for the third time. He attended Jones County Junior College. At 17 he volunteered to serve our Country in the United States Navy during the last year of WWII. He then returned home to graduate from JCJC, Mississippi College and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

He served Churches in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi, including Taylorsville First Baptist, First Baptist Geneva, AL, Ellisville First Baptist, Newton First Baptist, and Raleigh First Baptist. He taught music theory at Clark College in Newton. He served in revivals in Montana, Alaska, and Washington State. He taught music schools all over Mississippi for the Mississippi Baptist building in Jackson. Dewitt loved the Lord with all his heart. He was a faithful servant to the Lord Jesus Christ. He will be remembered for his love for the Lord, his family, and people. He was an artist in oil painting and counting cross stitching, and his love for gardening and landscaping was evident in the beautiful yard that they always had.

Serving as pallbearers will be Danny Broadfoot, Roger McIntosh, David McQueen, Bobby Glaze, James Thomas Pickering, Melton Rose. Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff Graves and Joe Lee Flynt.
