Earl grew up in Oregon, the son of Lindsey Boone Whiteley and Ella Louise Smith. He married Grace Josephine Cook in 1916 and they had one baby son, Harold. In 1918 his wife was sick with fever, and he tried to get her to the hospital in a bob sled, but she died on the way. She was only 19.
He then met a lovely lady who was working on the cook wagon at harvest time. They courted with cards and letters for some time, and then Earl married Viola Ellen Ripley in 1924. They had 4 sons together. First they were living in Walla Walla town, but later Earl built their homestead 'Whiteley Ranch' which is on what is now Whiteley Road in Walla Walla, out of the lumber of an old church. Aside from farming his many acres, he also worked as a repairman at the Marcus Whitman Garage. He played the fiddle, piano and harmonica.
