Glen was the son Earl and Viola Whiteley. He was the fourth of 5 boys. He attended Berny Grade school and later Braden School (a 2 room school house). When he was 7 their family moved to a property south of Walla Walla that bordered the state line with Oregon. This came to be called 'the Whiteley Ranch' and it is situated on what is now Whiteley Road. The family slept in the shed through the summer and fall of 1936, while Glen and his brothers helped his father build the house out of the lumber from an old abandoned church. In 1941 they finally got electricity, and shortly after, they got indoor plumbing and a party line phone.
Glen played basketball for the Walla Walla Bears, and he also participated in Boxing when he was in school. He graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1947. He attended Eastern Washington College for 3 years before joining the Army Medical Corps.
Glen served 2 years as a neuro-psychiatric case worker in Landstuhl, Germany. It was there that he met Hazel, an army nurse, the love of his life, and his future wife. He returned to college after the service and earned a B.A. and after graduation he and Hazel were married in Walla Walla, Washington, on Christmas day, 1954.
Glen earned a second college degree from Eastern (B.A.E.) and later taught Art, History and Psychology in High School for a year before joining the Spokane Sheriff's Department. He served in Patrol and Radio, as well as the Identification Bureau where he became an expert in photography and finger prints. He had special training through the FBI, and he often presented evidence in courtrooms. He was a forerunner in the field of Crime Scene Investigation, with his specialties. He was also a skilled sketch artist.
Glen was a professional photographer on the side as well, with 'Whiteley Studio' in the basement of their home. He took many portraits, and wedding photographs, as well as photographs of many famous personalities such as; President Jimmy Carter, Speaker of the House Tom Foley, Senator Bobby Kennedy, movie star Joe E. Brown, and many more. Glen ate lunch with Bobby Kennedy and photographed him 6 days before Senator Kennedy was shot.
He later was asked to serve as official Photographer for Expo 74 and managed two on-site camera stores during Expo. Glen served in Law Enforcement for 25 years. First with the Sheriff's office, and later he served (for 13 years) at the Department of Corrections as Supervisor of Records and Identification at Pine Lodge Correctional Center, in Medical Lake. He retired in 1991.
Glen was the Founder, Curator & President of the Spokane Law Enforcement Museum. He had many hobbies, including collecting cameras, and photographic memorabilia, restoring and collecting antique automobiles, and establishing the Spokane Law Enforcement Museum, including the collecting of countless artifacts for that endeavor.
He and Hazel were active members of several different car clubs, and took their vintage automobiles to fairs, parades, ceremonies, educational events, as well as tours. He and Hazel were especially involved with the Model 'T' Club, where they made many life-long friends. His 2 model T's and his model A are now part of the Spokane Law Enforcement Museum.
Glen & Hazel were also members of Manito Methodist Church. Glen's final year or so, he faithfully attended.
Glen was preceded in death by his wife Hazel who died Dec. 3rd, 2011 and his brothers Harold, Darrell, and Virgil. He is survived 2 daughters Sally who lives in California, Susan who lives in Asia, and 2 granddaughters Anastasia & Alexandra who live in CA and his brother Donald of Challis, Idaho.
