James lived in Provo, Ephraim, Scipio, and Salina. He operated a ranch in what is known as Maple Grove for a number of years. After a law suit with the town of Scipio over the water rights, James sold his holdings in Round Valley and moved to Salina. There he farmed for a living, but he also became the town dentist. He might use his harness shop or the kitchen for his dental office, but he would leave his farming any time to pull an aching tooth for a person in pain.
