John lived through the persecution and unrest with the rest of the early members of the Church. He did much to promote the well being of his community. He was an excellent horseman and used it in helping provide meat for the company on the way west. He treated the Indians with respect and was one of the best athletes around. He was one of the early settlers in Bountiful , lived there a few months, and then moved to Provo . He was then called to help settle Springtown in Sanpete County . The Indians burned their homes and drove off their cattle John moved to Vermillion in 1884 . John participated in the Indian wars and Echo Canyon problems. He was promoted to Lt. Colonel in the territorial militia and was well liked and respected by his men. He was always ready to help President Brigham Young when he was needed, including an exploration party to the southern part of the state. He remained active all his life.
