Cedric Verlin Hoban, 99, of Avon, passed away on Monday, Jan. 26, 2015, at his residence. He was born Dec. 10, 1915, in Waldron, to Edgar and Lena (Herndon) Hoban.

He graduated from Waldron High School in 1933 and served in the US Navy after graduating. Cedric lived in the area his entire life. He worked as a farmer for several years and was self-employed in Shelby and Decatur counties. Cedric was also a well driller and retired from Harry H. Fox & Sons. He also worked as a trophy maker at Dodge Inc. for three years and at Douglas Aircraft for eight years.

Cedric built and repaired violins as a hobby. He enjoyed reading, fishing and working. He was an avid gardener and had an orchard of fruit trees. He loved the outdoors and nature in general.

He married Blanch Barbara Maton on Jan. 2, 1942, and she preceded him in death in June of 2003.

He is survived by his children, Peter (Linda) Hoban of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Timothy (Pam) Hoban of Waldron, Patrick (Stacey) Hoban of Waldron and Therese (Jim) Schuerman of Avon; sister, Mary Barker of Shelbyville; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Donald Hoban; sisters, Doris M. Hinkle and Nora Barnett and brothers, Perry, Herschel, Marvin and Robert Hoban.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 29 at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home in St. Paul. Burial will follow in Van Pelt Cemetery in Shelby County.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association in care of the funeral home.
