John moved to the area now Anson Co., NC and before 1769 was married to Tabitha "maiden name unknown". He was among the "Signers of the North Carolina Regulators" at Anson Co., NC.
His (YDNA verified) first cousins Capt. Joel Phillips & Zachariah Phillips also moved from Anson Co., NC to Wilkes Co., GA in 1773. John's original land (now McDuffie Co.) was located @"Phillips side camp" along the Little River area (original land plats & Colonial GA Deeds).
John, Tabitha & four oldest children - David, Reuben, Ann & Catherine - moved from NC to what would become Wilkes Co.(named 1777), GA Nov 8th, 1773 ("Colonial Land Grants", Wilkes Co., GA). They first received land located near today's "Wrightsboro" (now McDuffie Co.) and resided there until about 1780. He and other militia unit soldiers were first granted 287-1/2 acres of land for serving in the GA troops against the British. He died before Feb 1783 and was buried on his home land along the north fork of Kettle Creek (abt 8-mi NW of Washington) in Wilkes Co., GA. In Feb 1783, the "Ga State Revolutionary Council (Minutes Feb 1783)" granted the "widow Tabitha 300-acres" and "the Heirs of John Thompson 150-acres" of land.Elijah Clarke signed the warrant. This was before "Revol. War Bounty Lands" were granted or Revol. War Pensions were approved (see GA historical records - GA was unique in doing this).
His widow Tabitha Thompson and sons David (b. 1769 NC) & Reuben (b. 1770-71 NC) and daughters Ann (b. NC), Catherine (b. NC) & youngest child Luraline ("Lawrany")b. GA resided @ Wilkes Co., GA until 1805 when they sold those properties ("excepting the grave yard", Wilkes Co. Deeds) and moved down to Milledgeville, Baldwin Co., GA. By early 1810, the widow Tabitha and 3 living children moved to Baldwin Co., AL & to Pike Co., MS. His widow Tabitha d. 1828 @ then Washington/today's Choctaw Co., AL.
The 300-acres originally owned by John Thompson, his widow & heirs where he remains buried is (Jan 2016) still now mostly undeveloped & owned by a timber company (Wilkes Co., GA Property Appraiser's Office Records). Location of this land and burial site was determined by use of the original Property "survey" traced forward by Property &Tax Records on file @ the Wilkes Co. Property Appraiser's Office-Special thanks to them for providing this service (2014).
