Donald Robert Schmidt Oct. 18, 1929 - Jan. 6, 2015 MIDDLEBURY - Donald Schmidt, 85, formerly of Middlebury, passed away on Tuesday, January 6, 2015, in Marietta, Georgia. He was born on October 18, 1929, in Lansing, IL. Don served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married Gloria J. Partner on March 5, 1951, and they were married 46 years before she was tragically killed by a drunk driver on October 31, 1997. Don moved to Florida where he met his current wife of 9 years, Ardith Mumy-Schmidt, formerly of Grand Rapids, MI. She survives along with Don's three loving children: Holly (Terry) Minix of Granger, IN, Cllif (Kim) Schmidt of Charleston, SC, and Kevin (Laurie) Schmidt of Middlebury, IN. Don has four grandchildren: Jeff (Kendra) Minix & Jamey (Darleen) Minix, both of Elkhart, IN, Andrew Schmidt of Grand Rapids, MI, and Nichole (Rob) Schmidt-Hume of Antioch, TN. Don also has four great-grandchildren, Jenner, Rayna, Jayden and Irelynn Minix, all of Elkhart, IN. Don will be laid to rest in the National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida, assisted by the Honor Guard of the American Legion, of which he was a long ime member. A memorial service is being planned to be held in Middlebury, IN, at a later date.
