Emma was the daughter of Charles Wyatt Tyree and Annie Belle Hastings, and was the 9th-oldest of their 12 children. She married Norval Alexander Welch in 1936 in Covington, Virginia, and three children were born of their union: Neola Jean, Howard Wayne, and Karen Elizabeth.

Emma lived in the Covington area her entire life and was a member of Edgemont Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. She was predeceased by her parents, daughter Neola Jean Howe, and 6 of her siblings (William Henry, Bessie Viola, Rosa Pearl, Charles Lee, James Jasper, and Benjamin Percy). Left behind to mourn were Emma's husband of 44+ years, Norval; son Howard; daughter Karen; sisters Mary Ellen, Eva Irene, and Lena Frances; brother Robert Hollings/Howens; plus a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
