Annie was a daughter of James Thomas Hastings and Nancy Elizabeth "Nannie" Ford/Foard, and the wife of Charles Wyatt "Charlie" Tyree. (Some family trees refer to James as J. C. Hastings or Thomas Hastings.) Annie was the first-born of James and Nannie's 12 children, and 7 of her siblings predeceased her, including 4 before 1900 whose names and birth/death dates are not yet proved.

Her father may have died between 1895 and 1900 as her mother was a Widow in the 1900 census, and Annie's youngest sibling was born in January 1896/97. Annie was living with her mom and six of her siblings in the 1900 census. In July 1902, her mom remarried. Then, in November 1902, Annie and Charlie were married in Alleghany County (many family trees incorrectly have an earlier year).

They were the proud parents of twelve children: William Henry, Bessie Viola, Mary Ellen, Rosa Pearl, Nancy Bell "Nannie", Charles Lee, James Jasper, Eva Irene, Emma Elizabeth, Robert Hollings, Lena Frances, and Benjamin Percy. All but one outlived Annie and Charlie.

Annie was born and raised in Alleghany County, Virginia, and all of her children were born and raised in that county. She predeceased Charlie, and also left behind her 11 children, 4 siblings, and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews, all of whom she dearly loved.
