A record of Barbara's "Taufschein" has survived, along with her marriage certificate denoting Jacob Winkleman as her spouse. Barbara's birth certificate names Jacob Riegel as her father, and Margaret Kaiser as her mother. A copy of these certificates are in the possession of this contributer (2005).
-------------------------------------------------
Barbara's German certificate has been translated into English: "Barbara Riegel(in) is of Christian parents, was born the 5th of November in the year of our Lord in Machantongo Township in Union County, in the Province Pennsylvania in North America, and was baptized by HR Wald(t)er. The baptism witnesses were Johannes Lowengood and his wife Barbara. The parents are the honorable Jacob Riegel and his honorable/respectable wife named Mariagreth, born Kasser(in). I, having been baptized stead bound through my baptism with my God, so I always speak with glad/joyful mouth, at the sign of the cross in fear of misery and Katholic Abbey, 2nd page turnover.(?)."
--------------------------------------------------
Years later as a grown woman and after her husband Jacob died in 1855, and with her children scattered, Barbara went to live with her elder father, Jacob Riegel, who lived in Rush Twp., Northumberland county, PA. Then, after Jacob's death 4 years later in 1859 Barbara continued to live with eldest married son John Winkleman and his wife Elizabeth, together with her second eldest son Jacob Winkleman, who also lived with them. Evidence of this household was recorded in the 1860 US PA Census for Point Twp., Northumberland county, PA. In, or about the year 1879, Barbara, then aged 71 years, and accompanied by her son John, his wife Elizabeth, and their children, left PA for a move west to the state of Illinois. This was also the year that Barbara's youngest daughter Sarah died. One might assume there was a connection here for her travel to Illinois first. Perhaps it was to attend to her daughter's funeral, and then see her (5) grandchildren. Later, she and her son John and family traveled further west to Iowa. Barbara lived out the remainder of her life there (Iowa), residing with her eldest daughter Susannah and her family. Barbara last appeared in the 1885 Iowa State Census, on April 24, 1885, residing with the Dale family, where she noted an age of 77 and that she was widowed and born in PA. Barbara lived a total of 8 years in Iowa. It is from the Susanna (Winkleman) Dale branch of the family (through Susan's son Jacob) that Barbara's records have survived.
--------------------------------------------------
Her obituary was published in the SUNBURY GAZETTTE, a copy of which has also survived: "Died: Winkleman - In Appanoose County, Iowa, February 21, 1887, Barbara Winkleman, aged 82 years. (This date is in conflict with the census 2 years prior which noted that Barbara was 77 years old!) The deceased left this vacinity with her son John about eight years ago for the above place. She was the widow of Jacob Winkleman, and the mother of Mrs. A.S. Werts, of Point Twp., and Mrs. John Marshall of this place. She was the mother of NINE children and the grandmother of FIFTY-ONE children." This contributor feels that Barbara was buried in the Robinson/Arnold Cemetery, where her son John Winkleman and wife ELizabeth are buried, as well as daughter Susanna Dale and son-in-law, as she resided with them at the time of her decease.
