Walter Henry Hale, 82, Topeka, Kansas, died Friday, December 26, 2014, at St. Francis Hospital, Topeka. He was born June 18, 1932, in West Fork, Arkansas, the son of Samuel David and Esther Estella (Burris) Hale.

Walter served in the U.S. Army for four years and in the U.S. Air Force for seventeen years. He was employed at the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office for seven years and at Kentucky Fried Chicken for twenty years. He moved to Topeka in April, 1969.

Walter was a member of Green Hills Baptist Church (Murfreesboro, TN). His memberships and honors were: Past Master of Golden Rule Lodge # 90, AF & AM, Past Master of Daylight Lodge # 454, AF & AM; Past Patron of Helena Chapter # 210, O.E.S.; Helena Past Matrons and Patrons; Knight Commander Court of Honor of Topeka Scottish Rite Bodies; Arab Shriners’ Legion of Honor; Past Commander of Topeka Commandry # 5; Past Puissant Sovereign of Saint Augustine Conclave, Red Cross of Constantine; Sojourners; Heros of 76; Knights of Saint Andrew; Past State President of High-Twelve International; Past Monarch of Media Grotto; Capitol Post # 1 of the American Legion; Philip Billard Post # 1650, V.F.W.; and Council Member of Job’s Daughters, Bethel # 58.

Walter was married to Lorraine Marie Neil on July 14, 1952, at Batesville, Arkansas. She preceded him in death on August 1, 1990. He was married to Joan Olga Perdue Nelson on June 3, 2006, in Topeka.

Surviving are his wife: Joan Olga Hale of the home; children: Patrick Hale of Topeka, Diana Beatty of Whiting, and Julie Luthi of Mayetta; step-daughters: Johanna Flott of Spring, TX, Helga Huckaby of Lancaster, and Olga Marie Strever of Topeka; siblings: Bonnie Martin and James Hale, both of West Fork, AR; four grandsons; three granddaughters; nine great-grandchildren; and eight step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Russell Hale, on March 18, 2012.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, at Topeka Scottish Rite Center, 2300 SW 30th Street, Topeka, followed by a Scottish Rite Rose Croix Service. Military honors will be conducted at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, 3616 SW Sixth Avenue.

Walter will lie in state after 3:00 PM Monday at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Avenue, Topeka, where Helena Chapter # 210, O.E.S. Services will be at 6:00 PM; Golden Rule Lodge # 90, AF & AM Services will be at 6:30 PM; and the family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 PM.
