Bert W. Bryant and Bessie Annis were married and had four children ~ Lucel, Mary, Walter & Joe (born 2/15/1928). Bessie passed away January 13, 1929 ~ Joe was less than a year old. Walter was 2 years & 7 wks. old.

Bert (riding on a horse, on the dirt road in Marshall Hill) saw Hattie Lowrance fishing in the creek from the bridge. He told someone that he was going to marry her, and he did.

Their first child (Jewel) was born in Marshall Hill ~ about 1/2 mile from where they first met, in the house where Hattie's mother (their Granny Lowrance) lived.

Bert Jr talked about how his mother was a good mother to Bert's four children ~ that she always treated them as if they were her own children.

The Bryant family later moved to Pollard, about 1 mile east of Pollard Church.

***************

Walter & Joe attended grade school at Pollard School. The schoolhouse burned and another one was built. Before the concrete footing dried, Walter & Joe wrote their names in the soft concrete. Their names could be seen from the west side of the new schoolhouse. Their names could easily be seen after the building was finished. All of the students at Pollard School knew the names, "Walter Bryant & Joe Bryant". And they knew that they were the uncles of Jewel Ferguson's kids (who did get a little teasing about their uncles writing on the schoolhouse). After Pollard School went out, someone bought the building, and had it moved north near the Thomas Chapel Community, and converted it into a house. The names are probably still on the side.
