Lorin's military service took them to Alabama, but afterward, they returned to their home state of Idaho, living in Mackay and Arco before ultimately settling in Lewiston, where they lived for 54 years. In Lewiston, Shirley devoted her time to her husband and raising four children. However, her capacity for love soon enlarged this circle to include many friends and neighbors. She loved attending Friday night dinner groups with her friends. She was an active and dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Although her family was always her first priority, Shirley never stopped challenging herself. She loved bowling, even achieving the nearly impossible score of 300. She took classes in gourmet cooking, sewed, participated in plays and singing groups, and crocheted. She loved to camp, bike, and go for walks. Yet every one of Shirley's interests also brought happiness and pleasure to others. Not only did Shirley enjoy her gardening and canning, but many of her family and friends found jars of peaches or relish in their pantries as reminders of Shirley's love.
Although multiple sclerosis later impeded some of Shirley's interests, she found many others to keep her busy. Crossword puzzles, bird watching, and her teams—Mariner baseball and Gonzaga basketball—were other passions that she could share with those she loved.
Shirley is survived by her husband Lorin, and her four children: Lorna (Charlie) Lackey, James (Anne) Papworth, Kristi (Dean) Sanderson, and Donna (John) Stellmon. She has 19 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren. She is also loved and remembered by her siblings LaMar Ellis, Deanna (Marvin) Jardine, Sam (Kathie) Ellis, and Wilma (David) Kuhn, as well as other family members and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on November 22, 2014, at the Mackay Idaho LDS church house, 531 Spruce, Mackay, ID 83251. A memorial service will also be held on December 6, at 11 a.m., at the LDS church house, 836 Preston Avenue, Lewiston, ID 83501.
