Meredith P., know as Polk, is said by his family to have been too young to join the fight during the War Between the States, but slipped off and went anyway. Family lore says he was "immediately blown to bits" by cannon fire.

No record of his service has been found, so his death or burial place is not known. Due to his young age, he may not have been officially enrolled. His brother William was in Co. E., 8th Battalion, GA Inf., CSA and it's possible that he and his brother, John 'Jay,' were also in the same outfit.

He was the son of John M. Griffith and Jane Ann Rogers and his siblings were William 'Bill', John L., a baby Lucy who died young, sisters Josephine Paralee, Zilpha Jane, Susannah and Mary.

Polk's death date is just a guesstimate, since no records seem to exist.
