William Earl 'Bill' Norris, 83, passed away peacefully of natural causes at his home Friday, Sept. 19, 2014.

He was born Oct. 20, 1930, in Hagerstown, son of John and Helen (Ramer) Norris. Bill was a graduate of Burney High School near Greensburg.

He married Carol J. (Rumsey) Norris April 17, 1953, and she survives having celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary this past April.

Bill was an U.S. Air Force veteran having served in the Korean War. After leaving the Air Force he worked civil service at Bakalar Air Force Base in Columbus until the base closed in 1970, then he transferred to Grissom Air Force Base until his retirement in October 1985.

He was a loving father and husband and loved to work outside in the yard and enjoyed mowing his yard. Bill was an avid race fan and attended Sprint and Midget racing all over the state, but especially enjoyed the tracks at Gas City and his favorite, Kokomo Speedway. He cherished the friends he met and set with before the races began.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; son Kim and daughter, Kelly Layman, all of Walton; and two granddaughters, Alisha Layman, Walton and Jessica Layman, Mishawaka and one sister, Nancy (John) Menefee, Hope.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Tamara Sue; son Gary, Kokomo; a son-in-law, Brenton 'Bink' Layman, Walton; two sisters, Jane Willeford, California and Sara Hime, Greensburg.

Out of respect for his wishes, no visitation will be held. Private graveside services will be held Wednesday at Galveston Cemetery, Pastor Steve Cole officiating.
