Drowned -

John Rober was in attendance at the republican state convention at Lincoln last week and his boy Mike was to meet him at Farwell on his return on Thursday evening, but imagine the sorrow of the father upon finding his boy dead with another, the son of Frank Sidel, Herman by name, drowned in Oak creek while preparing for a swim.

It seems that Mike and Herman with a younger brother of Herman intended going swimming and had gone to Oak creek which is nearby, for that purpose. After disrobing, Mike being the first undressed, sprang into the water, and immediately went down and did not again come to the surface. Herman sprang in after him and he did not come up. The younger brother of Herman then got into the water and by holding onto the foliage on the bank he let himself down until the water was up to his chin, but not being able to swim, he pulled himself out and informed a passerby of the disappearance of his brother and his friend. The stranger got a long scantling and felt the bodies of the two boys stuck fast in the mud in the bottom of the creek. He pried them loose and took them to their people who are prostrated with grief over their sad misfortune. Neither Rober or Sidel being at home at the time, it makes the misfortune doubly hard to bear.

additional information:

Herman was born Herman Seidel in Oberwildgrub, Silesia, now the Czech Republic. His parents later changed the spelling to Siedel . He immigrated to America with his parents Frank & Caroline Englisch Seidel in July 1886 at age 3. He is listed on a Baltimore Maryland passenger list with parents and sister Annie as well as his Uncle Wilhelm, Aunt Mary and cousins. He was living in Howard County with his parents and 5 sisters, along with his Uncle William and cousins at the time of his death. Herman and a neighbor boy Mike Rober drowned on July 2 1896, he was only 13 at the time. Burial unknown, somewhere in Howard County. His cousin John Sidel tried to save him.

Perhaps burial could be memorial #101859430 under the name John Siedel located in Saint Wenceslaus Cemetery, Howard County, Nebraska. However church records for St. Anthony's show Herman buried there in the church cemetery however no tombstone can be located.
