Dorothea Renate Rückert was born Feb. 5, 1831, to Johann Georg Rückert and his wife Christine Bosecker in Veilsdorf, Sachsen-Meiningen, Germany. She, along with her half-siblings Elizabeth and John, immigrated with their mother from Germany to Allen County, Indiana. There in Fort Wayne on March 5, 1848, Dorothea married John Baptist Altermatt. They farmed in Wisconsin and later in Leavenworth Township, Brown County, Minnesota, where Dorothea died in 1880. John and Dorothea became the parents of 11 sons and 1 daughter.
