John Baptist Altermatt was born in 1812 in Mümliswil in the Canton of Solothurn, Switzerland. He arrived in Baltimore, Maryland, in October 1841, and thereafter lived in Pennsylvania, New York, Illinois, and Indiana, where he served as a Protestant minister. He married Dorothea Rückert on March 5, 1848, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and took up farming. They lived in Sauk and Buffalo Counties in Wisconsin. Then in 1864 John Altermatt purchased land in Leavenworth Township, Brown County, Minnesota. John and Dorothea Altermatt had 11 sons and one daughter.
