Dorothy Whyte Stoneking was born April 4, 1918 at home, near Iroquois, South Dakota to Irwin (I.B.) Whyte and Alta Whyte and passed away Saturday, April 9, 2011 in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the age of 93.

Dorothy had two older brothers, Roland and Melvin, one older sister Gwendolyn and two younger sisters Charlotte and Lucile. The I.B. Whyte family farmed in South Dakota 7 years and then all returned to the Grand Meadow, Pierson, and Cushing, Iowa, areas to continue farming. Dorothy attended her early country schooling (K-2nd) in South Dakota and then in many country and town schools in the Cushing, Iowa, area as the family moved often to farm. She was a polio survivor at age twelve and went on to graduate from Cushing High School in 1936 (the same year her mother Alta passed away). Following graduation and during the early years of World War 2 she worked as a manager and operator 7 years for the Central West Telephone Company in Cushing, Iowa.

Dorothy and Joseph Giles Stoneking were married at Morningside Methodist Church Parsonage, Sioux City, Iowa, September 20, 1941. They lived in Cushing, Yetter and Sioux City, Iowa, before making their home in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, from 1945 until Joe passed away in 1983. Dorothy continued to live in Sioux Falls before needing living assistance and moving to Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 2003 to be closer to family. While residing in Sioux Falls, Dorothy was first and foremost a MOM to Brad and Randy, active in their school and church activities, Scouting and practicing baseball, she also worked outside the home in a variety of retail and office jobs, was an active member of First United Methodist Church, belonging to the United Methodist Women's Circle and volunteering at Sioux Valley Hospital. She loved to read, sew, knit and crocheted over a 100 throws for family, friends, church and donations. While living in the Minneapolis area at Park Shores, Chapel View and Jones-Harrison residences, she became a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Open Gate Club, Doer's Circle and enjoyed church activities, rooting for and watching the Minnesota Twins, grandchildren and great grandchildren visits and outings of all kinds. Her favorite food group was pie most any kind.

Those preceding her in death were her parents Irwin (I.B.) and Alta Whyte, husband Joseph Giles Stoneking, brothers Roland Whyte, Melvin Whyte; Sisters Gwendolyn (Whyte) Grell, Charlotte (Whyte) Huitt, sister in Law Loretta Whyte, brother in Law Arnold Grell, Edward Grell and Albert Huitt.

Survivors include sister Lucile (Whyte) Grell, sister-in-law Doris (Whyte) Denton; sons Bradley Joe Stoneking (Sandra), Randall Irwin Stoneking, five grandchildren - Mark Stoneking (Sherry), Jeffrey Stoneking (Betsy), Meg (Stoneking) Swenson (Stephen), Matthew Stoneking, Margaret (Stoneking) Larson, seven Great Grand Children Grayson, Olivia, Emma, Bayley , Kathryn, Beverly, Sydney and many nieces/nephews/friends.


Services will be 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 12 at Miller Funeral Home, 13th & Main, with visitation one hour prior. Internment will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13, at the Cushing Cemetery in Cushing, Iowa. Memorials may be made to donors choice.
