The Correctionville News, 20 March 1991, page 3: Melvin Whyte, 75, died Monday, March 4, 1991, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater, Texas. Memorial services were held Wednesday, March 6, at Faith Lutheran Church in Sweetwater with Pastor Eric Knippa officiating. Graveside services were held Monday, March 11, at 2 p.m. at the Cushing Cemetery with the V.F.W. of Correctionville, military service, and Rev. Smelser of Galva Lutheran Church officiating. Melvin was born July 11, 1915, in Ida County to Irwin B. and Alta Laura Law Whyte. He was raised in Iowa and married Doris Gordon on October 5, 1941, in Nebraska City, Nebraska. They had three children, two daughters and a son. Mr. Whyte was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Correctionville, holding a variety of offices. He was a disabled veteran of World War II, retired farmer and rural mail carrier. He lived in Sweetwater the past thirteen years and was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and drove the van for S.N.A.P. for the past 3 ½ years. He was proud of his service record, serving in the 347th Corps of Engineers. He wore the European African Middle Eastern Theatre campaign ribbon, five overseas bars, was awarded three bronze stars for Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland campaigns. He was preceded by his parents, brother Roland Whyte, and a sister, Charlotte Huitt. Survivors include his wife of Sweetwater, two daughters, Barbara Maaske Parker of Sweetwater and Cynthia Jones of Abilene, one son, Michael Ross Whyte of Socorro, New Mexico, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren, plus three sisters, Gwen Grell of Cushing, Dorothy Stoneking of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Lucille Williams of Atlantic, Iowa.
