In 1780, an attack was made on some of the early settlers from Bryan Station while they were making salt at a ford in the Kentucky River. Pioneer Stephen Frank was killed, and the settlers thereafter called the crossing "Frank's Ford." This name was later changed to Frankfort.
James married Ada Bell Perry on March 17, 1890, in Kansas City, Kansas. They had seven children in 19 years. Their children are:
Herbert Madison "Pearl" "Clay" Claiborne 1890–1959
Edgar James "Ed" Claiborne 1893–1975
William McKinley Claiborne 1896–1938
Grace May Claiborne 1900–1960
Walter Perry Claiborne 1903–
John Roosevelt "Jack" Claiborne 1906–1986
Ada Viola Claiborne 1909–2000
His wife Ada Bell passed away on May 3, 1910, in Kansas City, Kansas, at the age of 39 with heart disease. They had been married 20 years. Her baby, Ada Viola, was just over 1 year of age at her mother's death. Ada Bell's oldest child, Herbert, who the family called " Pearly", was age 19 at her death. This left James with 7 children raise alone.
James remarried in about 1912 to a widow woman named Euphemia Stahl who had 8 children of her own. James became very unhappy in his marriage and life was too difficult for James and, sadly, he took his own life on December 9, 1914, at his farm two miles northwest of Piper, Wyandotte County, Kansas, when he was 49 years old. After his death, James and Ada's children were all separated. Some went to live with relatives, others may have gone to the orphanage.
James was buried on December 13, 1914, next to his first wife, Ada Bell (Perry) Claiborne, at the Bethel Cemetery, in Bethel, Wyandotte County, Kansas.
After the Claiborne children were all grown, they all found one another again and were able to visit one another for the remainder of their lives.
