After moving to Waynesboro, David took in a young mother, Winifred, and her two smallest daughters, Mary Elizabeth and Thelma. Winifred's first husband had died, she had been deserted by her second husband, and then contracted tuberculosis. Prior to Winifred's death, she and David had two children together in 1915, a boy and a girl who were born premature due to Winifred's illness and lived only 5 hours. After Winifred died in 1917, David raised Mary and Thelma as his own. Until their deaths in 1987 and 2003 respectively, my mother Mary and her sister Thelma called him their father. He was a good man. Although there is no marker for his grave, he is buried in the McDaniel family plot along with Winifred (McDaniel) Keever, her father Reverend Charles Benjamin McDaniel, her stepmother Mary Jane (Gearhart) McDaniel and sister Lottie Faye McDaniel.
