Alberta Ruth Swihart, 89, a longtime Sedro-Woolley area resident, passed away at her home on May 21, 2014.

She was born on February 20, 1925 in Emmett, Idaho, one of eleven children of Sidney & Nellie (Gough) Pitman. She was raised and attended school in Emmett, Idaho until the family moved to Big Lake in 1936, where they resided for a few years. Alberta later moved to Seattle where she graduated from Queen Ann High School in 1943.

Alberta returned to the Skagit Valley where she was united in marriage to Joseph William Swihart in 1944. After her children were raised she attended Skagit Valley College where she earned a degree in Nursing in 1962 and worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Northern State Hospital for eleven years and then at United General Hospital for eighteen years until her retirement in 1987.

Alberta enjoyed gardening and quilting and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

She is survived by her daughter, Martha Bruns of Sedro-Woolley and her son; Bill Swihart and his wife Vicki of Lyman; 8 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, J.W.; daughter Judy Stanek; setp-son Robert Kempe; grandson Scott LeBert; 6 sisters, Nellie Johnson, Leatha Anderson, Dorothea Shoemaker, Edna Fritch, Nora Buck and Helen Vine and 4 brothers, "C.L." Roy Pitman, Carl Pitman, Sidney Pitman and Harold "Curly" Pitman.

At Alberta's request there will be no services. Private inurnment will be at Sedro-Woolley Union Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Skagit Valley College Nursing Program or to the Diabetes Association. Cremation and inurnment arrangements are under the direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
