Melvin N. Backherms
Melvin Norman (Jiggs) Backherms, 76, Mitchell, died Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at 10:55 a.m. at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born March 7, 1938, in Corydon, he was the son of the late Laurel and Ada Mae Crone Backherms.

He was a 1957 graduate of Corydon High School, a project engineer for the Indiana Dept. of Transportation and retired with 44 years of service and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two siblings, Shirley and Lonnie Backherms.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Nita Kay Backherms; three children, Michael Edward Backherms of Mitchell, Cindy Ann Farmer of Orleans and Suzie Marie Sehr of Bedford; two brothers, Dennis Backherms of Corydon and Laurel Backherms Jr. of Salem; and two granddaughters.

Visitation: Friday, April 18, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, April 19, after 9 a.m. at Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Michell.

Funeral: Saturday April 19, at 10 a.m. in the memorial chapel of the funeral home with burial in Mitchell Cemetery.

Officiants: Father Rick Eldred and Deacon Dave Reising.

The family suggests memorial gifts to the Family of Melvin Norman Backherms.
