Rites Held Here Monday For
A. De Graaf, Prominent Resident


Andrew De Graaf, prominent retired farmer, church and community leader, died at the Orange City Community Hospital Friday, Oct. 12 at the age of 82 years.

Mr. De Graaf was bom Aug. 14, 1880 on a farm north of Alton and lived there for 66 years until he and his wife retired in 1947 to the home which they purchased in Alton.

He married Flora Sipma Feb. 24, 1904, and she survives him, together with one son, Marion of Minot, No. Dak. and one daughter, Ethel, Mrs. Clifford Bogaard of Orange City; 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Three children preceded him in death - Frank in 1931, Arthur in 1961, and Jeanette, Mrs. William Van Rooyen in February 1962.

Mr. De Graaf was a member of the Alton Reformed church, where he served as elder for many years and also as a consistory member, Sunday school teacher and Sunday school superintendent in the Newkirk Reformed church, of which he was a member before moving to Alton.

He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Farmers Mutual Coop. Co. of Alton for 37 years, serving 24 years as President; and for a number of years served on the board of the Iowa Mutual Ins. Co. of Hull.

Mr. De Graaf was admired for his good judgment and sterling character and had a host of friends.

Funeral services were held Oct. 15 af the First Reformed church in Alton, Rev. Ralph Meyer officiating, with interment in the Newkirk cemetery.

Pallbearers were nephews: Frank Vander Wilt, Ben Roetman, John Roetman, Frank De Graaf, Gerald De Graaf, Harvey Vander Pol.

Among out-of-town relatives here for the services were Mr. and Mrs. H. O. Hanson, Ortonville, Minn.; Mrs. Myron Reeves, Rochester, Minn.; Mrs. Anna Hyink, Watertown, S. Dak.; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hammerstrom, Mrs. Lester Hammerstrom; Mrs. Henry Kock, all of Lennox, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Audley De Graaf, and daughters Ann and Sue, Mrs. Jerry Dunn, Mrs. Adrian Huygens and son Allen of Akron, Iowa.
