Bernard Scieszinski age 79 of Pella formerly of Melrose, passed away Monday, March 31, 2014, under the care of Hospice of Pella at his home in Pella.

Bernard was born September 7, 1934, to John A. and Mary A. (Craig)Scieszinski in Melrose. He married Carol(Hannam)Scieszinski May 29, 1954, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Melrose. They were blessed with two children, Mary and Barry.

Bernard joined the Air Force January 1954, where he completed basic training at Lackland Air Base in San Antonio, TX with the Strategic Air Command, and continued schooling at Lowry Air Base in Denver, CO. Following that, her spent his remaining time at Whiteman, Air Force Base in Sedalia, MO, with the exception of a few months that he was in Lakenheath, England. He was honorably discharged in January, 1958.

Bernard was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Pella and the American Legion Post 0685 in Melrose. He spent 47 years farming the family Century Farm, before retiring in 2005. He enjoyed spending time with all his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He spent as much time with them as he could, and attended all their ball games, and all other activities.

Bernard is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Carol of Pella; a daughter, Mary Murphy of Albia; a son, Barry(Sheryl)Scieszinski of Pella; four grandchildren, Lynn (Mike)Beard of Albia, Becky(Mike)Teno of Melrose, Jeff(Krista)Scieszinski of Des Moines, and Cathy(Daniel)Ray of Pella; and nine great grandchildren, Emerald, Tyler and Alexandria Beard of Albia, Jack, Joe, and Jacob Teno of Melrose, Connor and Owen Ray of Pella, and Callie Scieszinski of Des Moines. He is also survived by a brother, Robert(Wilma)Scieszinski of Des Moines; and a sister-in-law, Dolores Scieszinski of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Scieszinski; a grandson in infancy, Billy Murphy; and two brothers, John Joe in infancy and Edward P.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am Monday, April 7, 2014, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albia; with Fr. Michael E. Volkmer, C.PP.S. officiating and Fr. Jeff Belger co-officiating. Burial with military rites provided by the American Legion of Melrose Albia, and Lovilia will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Melrose. Visitation will open at 11 am Sunday, April 6, 2014, at Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Bernard's family present throughout the day and evening until 8 pm. A rosary will be led by St. Mary's Altar and Rosary Society at 4 pm, with a Christian Wake Service beginning at 6 pm. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Pella Comfort House, Welcome Home Soldier Memorial, or St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albia.
