Ferris Jay Ringer
Portage -- Ferris Jay Ringer, 69, of Portage, IN, passed away Saturday, April 12, 1997 at the VNA Mary E. Bartz Hospice Center in Valparaiso. He was born September 21, 1927 in Friedens, PA, the son of Ferris Calvin and Edna Pearl (Shoemaker) Ringer. A Portage resident for 46 years, formerly of Somerset County, PA, he was a 1945 graduate of Somerset High School. On December 28, 1946 in Westchester, Virginia, he married Louella Barron. Jay was a retired supervisor employed by the U.S. Steel in the South Pickle Plant and the Hot Rolling Division for 32 years. He was then employed as a supervisor by Acutus Industries in Gary for 8 years and then as an associate in the Bicycle Department of the Valparaiso Walmart for 8 years.
Surviving are his wife, Louella "Lou" Ringer of Portage; one son, Barry (Deborah) Ringer of Portage; two daughters, Gloria (James) Bryant of Apopka, FL, and Evelyn (John) Tinsley of Portage; three grandchildren, Eric (Rachel) Ringer of Chesterton, Brian Ringer of Portage and Amy (Brian) Rowe of Orlando, FL; four brothers, William (Alice) Ringer of Carlisle, PA, Robert (Ann) Ringer of Farmington, NY, Karl (Dee) Ringer of Angola, NY, and Donald Ringer of Tampa, FL; six sisters, Hazel Sipe of Rockwood, PA, Myrna (Samuel) Madjerich of Monks Corner, SC, Lois (Leslie) Peters of Winterhaven, FL, Mary (Albert) Newton of Tampa, FL, Dorothy Felton of Serlin, PA and Ruth (Donald) Shaffer of Somerset, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Evelyn Fern Baker.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 16, 1997 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Peter Lutheran Church, located at 6540 Central Avenue in Portage with interim Pastor Tim Engel of Holy Cross Lutheran Church officiating. Interment in Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso.
Friends may call Tuesday, April 15, 1997 from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Engel Funeral Home, located at 2700 Willowcreek Road in Portage, IN. Memorial tributes may be made to the St. Peter Lutheran Church or the VNA Mary E. Bartz Hospice Center.
