The fourth son of William and Euphemia (Jackson) Braden, Richard J. early learned the value of land and how to manage a productive farm. With his older brothers, he assisted his father in the construction of a homestead in Decatur Co., IN, to which place the family had migrated from KY.

Following his father's untimely death, Richard was appointed guardian of his younger siblings Robert and Mary Ann. He married Nancy Donnell in 1827.

Dick and Nancy moved their growing family to IA in the early 1840s, and it was in this state that the younger two of their eight children were born. Successfully, R. J. Braden farmed land in Washington Co., IA for some 20 years. Subsequently, a move to Mahaska Co., IA brought the Bradens to the place where they lived the remainder of their lives.
