The second daughter of Richard and Nancy (Donnell) Braden, Euphemia was named in honor of her grandmother, Euphemia Jackson Braden.

As a young child, Ann traveled west with her family to Washington Co., IA where her father established a farm and homestead near Brighton.

Educated in the Brighton schools, Ann married John S. Whitmore in 1858, relocating with him in Mahaska Co., IA where Mr. Whitmore operated a highly successful milling business in conjunction with a Mr. Anderson....the firm of Whitmore and Anderson was located at Alpha Mills, near Oskaloosa.

The Whitmore-Braden union produced seven children, only four of whom appear to have reached their majority.
