James Craton was the fifth child of seven born to Andrew Jackson Coburn and Roseanne Marshall Coburn. The family followed the coal camps of Kentucky. Eventually relocating to the coal and steel mill area near Birmingham, he worked as a coal miner for the Tennessee Coal Iron and Railroad Company.
