William Pearl was the first child of seven born to Andrew Jackson Coburn and Roseanne Marshall Coburn. The family followed the coal camps of eastern Kentucky until relocating to the coal and steel mill area of Birmingham, Alabama sometime around 1900. According to family, William Pearl possibly developed a knowledge of geology. With a critical eye for precious stones, he became the buyer-broker of diamonds for the jewelry retailers in Birmingham thereby, escaping his hardships as a coal miner.

After the death of his wife, Clarence Ann (Roberts) Coburn in 1931, William Pearl married Marion Marilyn Johnson in 1943. They had one son, Donald Hugh Coburn.

Note: The headstone birth year is incorrect, so I chose not to add it to the memorial.
