Nannie Kate ASHBY was the fourth child of Bladen and Elizabeth FOSTER Ashby. Born Dec. 7, 1860, near Prairie City, Kansas, "Kate" grew up in the vicinity that became known as Baldwin City. She married Washington Cyrus Black January 1, 1879 and they continued to live near Baldwin where their only child, Earl was born in 1884. Washington died in 1894.

Kate's husband Washington Cyrus Black was the brother of Harry James Black who married Eva Jane ASHBY, Kate's sister.

Kate's second marriage was to Dr. William F. Osborn who was born Dec. 31, 1830 and was a civil war veteran. He died Jan. 21, 1914. Kate continued to make her home in Baldwin until she passed away Jan. 13, 1932.
