Gertrude Octava ASHBY was the tenth child of Bladen and Elizabeth FOSTER Ashby. She was born near Prairie City, Kansas and spent her childhood there.

She was married in Ottawa, Kansas to Perl Bruce Smith on December 25, 1900 (b. Sept. 20, 1876). They lived in Kansas City, Missouri for a while and later spent many years in Eastern Colorado.

Octava and her husband had four sons. Three of their sons died as children, Robert, age 14, and two infants.

After Octava and Perl divorced in 1933, Octava spent several years in Eastern Kansas with her sisters and worked in Kansas City.

On Sept. 17, 1937, Octava married Elmer Summers. They lived on a ranch in Eastern Colorado for several years and then retired to Holyoke, Colorado.

Octava died on Nov. 11, 1963. Her husband Elmer, three sons and two step sons had preceded her. She was survived by one son (no children ?) and six step children.
