The death of Richard C. Wegner who for many years was this community's well known and highly respected resident, occurred at his home at Oakes, ND., Monday, February 21 after an illness of about three months from diabetes and resulting complications. During that time he was visted by relatives of this place, who sorrowfully noted the fading of the spark of life, which finally went out while yet in the prime of life, being forty-seven years, two months and six days old at the time of his death.
His untimely end marks the death of a loving husband and father, an up-right, God-fearing gentleman, whose friends were numbered by his acquaintances.
Richard was born in the vicinity of Nicollet, near New Ulm, December 15, 1868. His parents who were among the early pioneers of this section, moved to Charleston, Redwood county, and settled on a homestead in 1872. For about thirty-three years the deceased was a resident of Charleston, living with his parents and after attaining manhood engaged in farming for himself. In 1905 he came to Lamberton with his family and made his home in this village for three years. Since that time he has made his home at Oakes, N.D. While in Lamberton he was engaged as traveling salesman for the Advance Threshing Machine company and while at Oakes he represented the Rumeley company and later the Hardware and Implement company.
In 1897 he was married to Miss Mary Borchardt of Springfield, who with their five children, survive him. The three boys are Wernert, Roland and Grant; the girls Orpha and Marian. He is also survived by three brothers; August, William and Charles and one sister Mrs. Augusta Griese, all living in this community.
From his infancy the deceased had been a member of the Evangelical church. He was also a member of the Masonic fraternity.
The remains accompanied by the family and Chas. Wegner, were received here Thursday morning. Short funeral services were held at the August Wegner home at 12:30 and at the Evangelical church at one o'clock. Rev J Gongoll assisted by Rev. F.W. Tesch of Germantown, officiated. Rev H.W. Mitchell of the Methodist church also spoke briefly.
Vocal selections were rendered by the male choir of the Germantown church, Interment was in the Lamberton cemetery.
