On July 3, 1908, the afternoon Carrizozo News, published weekly in Carrizozo, NM, told this story of Lower's passing:
"L. Hale, for many, many years a respected citizen of this county, and who possessed a fine alfalfa and fruit farm on the Ruidoso, died at Oscura Monday of last week. The remains were conveyed to the old Ruidoso home and there laid to rest. The deceased was in his seventy-fourth year. His wife preceded him, having died over a year ago."
His remains were carried by family members to his Ruidoso homestead. He was buried in an unmarked grave next to Emma Hale, his second wife. The location of the original family cemetery near Lower and Joshua's homes and graves therein are not known today. Due to its approximate location, descendents say that most likely the cemetery was paved over after 1940 by a parking lot of the White Mountain Inn. Google earth 33.335245, -105.586977
