Lucy Hammel Johnson wife of Fred Johnson whom she married 27 May 1898 in Tippecanoe CO., IN. She was found dead in her bedroom, the news came over the phone from Stockwell that she had been found. Eldest daughter of Nathan Hammel of Stockwell, and sister of Postmaster and Joseph Hammel of Clarks Hill. Her husband had left her getting ready for church while he went up town. She had promised her family to be down soon. After she did not come down stairs her sister Kitty went to find her and was horrified at what she saw. Dr. Fickle was hastily called but it was over, she was gone. No one can depict the sadness and great grief her aged father and mother, herself an invalid, and the brothers and sister as they gathered about her. She had married Fred Johnson ony a year before and for a time they lived in Terre Haute. For a short time they have been staying with her father and mother. Mr. Johnson was out of employment, but they were not in need. The funeral occured Tuesday morning from the M.E. Church at Stockwell and was largely attended. Rev Frank Mikels preached the discourse and there were songs by the choir. The pallbearers were her cuosins, John, Jess and Will Kesler, Otto Van Curen, Garrison Shumaker, and John Miller. The interment was at Conroe.
