Baby John was very sick and his parents called out the new town doctor to look at him many times. The new doctor kept saying he was fine, he just had a bad cold. The families normal doctor was old Dr. Hayes of Tillamook and he was retired I think at this time, but little John's father got him to come out to see the baby as he was not getting better, but only worse. Dr. Hayes walked in, flipped baby John over and said,"oh my god, he has Empyema just like his brother did, get him to the hospital in Portland as fast as you can!"
My great grandfather drove his little son to Portland, but sadly he died in the hospital. When he returned to Tillamook with his baby son to bury, he went into the office of that new young doctor and he was not in. My grandma said it was a good thing the doctor was not in the office that day because she thinks her daddy may have killed the man as he was so upset because this doctor's continued misdiagnoses cost baby John's life. The weird thing is OHSU hospital in Portland eventually appointed this doctor as head of the Pediatric Department. This upset my great grandparents so much. If old Dr. Hayes had not been retired, baby John may have grown to have a wonderful life. His parents and siblings spoke of their love for him their entire lives and his passing left a hole in my great grandparents hearts. He is buried next to his brother Jack who also died of Empyema. John's sister, Nancy called him "little dough boy".
