William came to Oklahoma Panhandle in covered wagon and was 6 foot 6 inches tall and weighed near 220 pounds. It was noted that William went to school through the 5th grade and at age 29, he went back to school for 3 months. William felt called to ministry but was discouraged because of his lack of education. William had dreams of the future that proved true. He died at the Shattuck, Ellis County, Oklahoma hospital after an illness of three days, trachea pneumonia.

William ROSE

A rose bush grew on the plains of Texas. It branched and thrived until the ten young roses have scattered from Oregon to South Dakota to Georgia. William and Flora started the Texas Roses.

William ROSE was born in Missouri July 24, 1879, but came to the plains as soon as he could, where he met Flora WIDMER at a camp-meeting and watermelon feed. Flora was born near Coldwater, Kansas, March 27, 1885, but her father, who was born in Switzerland, took a claim in Lipscomb County two years later.

Flora and William were married at her parent's home on Gilhula Creek August 28, 1910. Their first home was dirt floored, half dugout on William's claim in Beaver County, Oklahoma. William loved the windy plains where no rocks or timber had to be cleared from the fields.

Flora had lived out a claim where she also taught school for two and a half years before she was married. In 1914 they moved in a covered wagon fifteen miles south of what is now Booker to care for Flora's mother, Mrs. John Widmer, and operate the farm where Flora grew up. They had two daughters by this time and when the older one was sent out to bring in chips for the fire, she returned saying there weren't any. Flora had to show her what wood chips were. She'd always gathered cow chips for fuel!

Most of the time the lovely Gilhula Creek which flows through the ranch was a treasure for fishing, daily swims in summer, sliding on ice and skunk hunting in winter. Many the happy hours it furnished the family!

The ROSE family raised cattle, wheat, row crops, sheep, and milked many cows on the section.

One memory picture all the children have is of their mother, auburn hair piled high, singing as she played the organ in the evenings.

William reached only the sixth grade during his childhood, but he valued education so much that he returned to school one winter after he was twenty-seven years old. He and Flora were determined that their children should have an education. All of them did finish high school at Booker, and most went to college a year of more. At this time four have their degrees and another is near a degree.

In order of age the children are: Elmo RIVES, mother of two daughters, who lives at Parkdale, Oregon. Vea FILLINGIM, mother of six daughters, who lives at Wheeler, Texas. Virgil L. ROSE, the father of two sons and two daughters, who lives in Midwest city, Oklahoma. Faye SELL is the mother of two sons. She adopted the daughter of her oldest son after his death, and they now live on a ranch in Ochiltree County, Texas. Willa Singleton FILLINGIM is the mother of one son and two daughters and now lives on a ranch in Hemphill County, Texas. Joyce HARDAGE is the mother of two sons, and lives at Claremore, Oklahoma. Houston ROSE is the father of four sons and two daughters and lives at Faulkton, South Dakota. Gay ANDLER is the mother of five singing daughters and lives in Decatur, Alabama. Eda BYNUM is the mother of two daughters and lives in Rome, Georgia.

William died in 1946 and Mrs. ROSE now lives next door to Willa, between Wheeler and Canadian, Texas. The beautiful old home place is still in the family, owned by Fan and Donald SELL.

So the Roses still bloom in Texas and other places, too.
