Hank was born in Oklahoma, while his family were visiting his grandparents, but he grew up in New Mexico. His family were homesteaders in Bryantine, Quay County, New Mexico. He attended high school in Logan, where he played basketball.

He was a tall, quiet man, who always claimed that he was tone deaf. He was close to all of his siblings and parents. After Bottomless Lake State Park opened up, he took his two nieces to see it. He was standing close to the edge of one of the lakes and his nieces were so worried that he'd fall in and they'd never see him again. He loved them so much - he was the epitome of a family man.

He went to college, paid for by his uncle, John Henry Hawkins whom he was named after. He could repair anything that needed fixed - he was very mechanical.

Hank was the middle child of five children, having an older sister and brother and a younger sister and brother.

He moved to Oklahoma, where he met his wife Lavena and they married on 24 March 1935. They moved to New Mexico for a while, and then moved back to Oklahoma. They continued living there until moving to California and settling in Fair Oaks.

One of his favorite sayings, "If it does any good at all, it'll help you." ☺

They had three daughters and nine grandchildren.
