Paul was born on 28 February 1915, along with his twin sister Polly, in Earlsboro, Pottawatomi, Oklahoma. Paul was the smaller twin and either didn't get enough nourishment or oxygen in the womb (they weren't sure of the cause). He functioned ok, just remained child-like mentally.

His family was just in Oklahoma temporarily, so he grew up in Tucumcari, New Mexico. He and his cousin Ward (Emma's son) used to make cookies and peanut brittle at their Grandma Hawkins, and take it downtown to sell. My mom said that she remembers that he was always pleasant to be around.

After his parents died, he moved in with his brother Hank and then continued living with Hank after he married Lavena. When Hank and Lavena moved to Texas, they placed him in a state hospital. He eventually moved to a group home, where he resided for the rest of his life.
