Rev. James Andrew Shuler, who formerly lived in this section, died May 21 at his home in Lawrence, Kan., of cancer, after serving 27 years in the ministry. He lived in Lawrence for the past 16 years.

Rev. Mr. Shuler was born May 25, 1869, at Comer's Rock, son of William Marshall and Nancy Comer Shuler. On June 20, 1895, he married Miss Clementine Phillippe, of the Louis King Phillippe family, Rural Retreat, who survives.

They had three children, a daughter, Mrs. Merton Trast, of Greenbelt, Md., and two sons, Rev. W. L. Shuler, of Axtell, Kan., and Herman, who died about 11 years ago.

Rev. Mr. Shuler taught several terms of school in this vicinity before entering the Methodist ministry. After graduation from Chattanooga University he took his first appointment at Republic City, Kan. He preached in many schoolhouses. He was forced to retire because of a throat ailment.

Survivors also included a sister, Mrs. Myrtle Shuler Phillippe, of the Rural Retreat family; Mrs. Ellen Shuler, his father's widow; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Shuler lived in Marion many years and Rev. Mr. James Shuler owned a farm near Marion where Rev. W. L. Shuler was born.

Brothers and sisters of Rev. James Shuler, now deceased, were Dr. Joseph A. Shuler and John W. Shuler, Mrs. Betty Jones and Mrs. Cora Atkins, of Atkins.

The funeral was held at the Rumsey Funeral Home, Lawrence, May 23 and burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lawrence. Dr. George Bolcourt, of Ottawa, district superintendent of the Methodist Church, and Dr. O. E. Allison, pastor of the First Methodist Church, Lawrence, officiated.

SHULER: James Andrew Shuler was an appointed preacher for Hillsboro 1904-05. Born May 25, 1869, in Comers Rock, Va., he was admitted to Va. MEC on trial in 1902 and granted full connection in 1906; presumably, he was later ordained an Elder. He preached under MEC appointment 27 years (1903-05, 1906-31), retired in 1931, and died May 21, 1947, in Lawrence, Kans. (age nearly 78). His other appointments were Accotink in Va. MEC (1903-05); N.W. Kansas MEC (1906-08), S. Kansas MEC (1908-14); and Kanas MEC (1914-31).
