Adah was the eldest of four children born to Grove Messenger and Pamelia Gibbons. Her siblings were Eliza (died young), Frederick Dent and William Henderson.

When she was barely 2 years old, Adah traveled with her parents and her little sister from Granby, Connecticut to Granville, Ohio to become one of the founding pioneer families who settled that town.

On 25 Mar 1824 she married Dr. Charles West, son of George Washington and Hannah Jane (Fairbanks) West, in Granville. They had twelve children: Eliza Jane, George Washington, Thomas Lysander, William Henderson, Hugh Blanchard, Luman Jefferson (died young), Charles Ashton, Lewis Almond (died young), Adah Mary, Edwin (died young), Elvira Melissa and Farris Messenger (died young).

At some point the family moved from Granville. First to Jefferson township in Elkhart County, Indiana where, in 1850, Charles and Adah have William, Hugh, Ashton, Adah and Melissa living with them. Ten years later, they're found 42 miles southwest of there in Plymouth, Marshall County, Indiana as William and Elvira are listed as living with their parents in the 1860 census. This is where Charles and Adah lived out the rest of their lives.
