At this writing it is not known how or when Charles made the trip from Maine to Granville, Licking County, Ohio, but on March 25, 1824 he married Adah Messenger, daughter of Grove Messenger and Pamela Gibbons, pioneer settlers of that place. Over the next 19 years they had 12 children, the first 5 were born in Granville, the rest born in Indiana. Of those 12, four did not survive to adulthood.
It is not known exactly when Charles and Adah left Granville but their 7th child, Charles Ashton, was born in LaPorte County, Indiana in 1834. Then at some point the family settled in Plymouth, Marshall County, Indiana. It is not known how or where Charles trained to become a physician or exactly what type of medicine he practiced. His 1868 probate and will papers indicate that he because quite successful. He must have been somewhat charitable because within those papers are lists of people who owed him money for services. His wife lived another 19 years.
