Stella Mae Davis Brotherton, 89, of Gap Creek Road in Bulls Gap, died Saturday morning at Durham-Hensley Nursing Home in Chuckey.

She was born Nov. 6, 1917, in the Baileyton/Stomper community, and was a daughter of the late Florence Starnes and Charles Davis. She was the widow of Joe Ralph Brotherton, her husband of 56 years, who died Dec. 23, 1999.

She is survived by a granddaughter: Melissa Rae Brotherton Carson, and a great-grandson: Joseph Carson, with whom she made her home; a son: Jerry Brotherton of Huntsville, Ala.; four grandsons: Jerry Brotherton, Gary Brotherton, Jeffrey Brotherton, and Jesse Brotherton, and their families, all of Huntsville; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and her special friends, Brenda and Lloyd Couch of Greeneville.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter: Pamela Michelle Brotherton.

There will be no formal visitation.

The family will have a private funeral service and interment.

Honorary pallbearers will be residents of Gap Creek, the faculty and staff of Durham-Hensley Nursing Home, and the caregivers of Smoky Mountain Health and Hospice.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pilot Knob Cemetery Fund or to the charity of the donor's choice.
