Mrs. Mary Rothwell Gayton passed away at her Ocean Grove, New Jersey, M.E. home, December 22, 1939. She was born in Smyrna, Del., the daughter of Gideon E., and Catherine Collins Rothwell, and was married to John A. Gayton of Mt. Union, October 20, 1886. She is survived by one son, Fred L. Gayton and his wife. Two grandchildren, Anita and Fred Jr., two sisters, Mrs. W. E. Kough, Carlisle, Pa.; Mrs. James M. Shover, St. Petersburg, Florida.
Services were held in Mt. Union Wednesday, 2:30 p.m., December 27th, conducted by Dr. Kenn, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
Burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Mrs. Gayton had spent several years in the home of her sister, Mrs. Henrietta Borst, mother of Mrs. S. B. Hewlett, and well known to the Newville people.
The Gaytons were formerly residents of Lewistown, Pa., for a number of years, Mrs. Gayton, coming to Newville after her husband's death. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and interested in all activities of the church.
Her life was an example of a beautiful Christian character.
Mr. Fred L. Gayton and wife, Lexington Kentucky, and Buel R. Archey, attended the services at Mt. Union.
Also Mrs. S. B. Hewlett, son, George, Miss Gertrude Borst, Glen Dale Sanitarium, Washington, D.C. Miss Katherine Zinn, Newville, Pa., attended the funeral services and were guests of Mrs. Edward Beers, and brother, Mr. Cloyd B. Ewing.
The bearers were R. M. Keil, Stanley Klinger, H. Hayes Whorton, Donald M. Appleby, Cloyd B. Ewing and Frank Longacre.
